Why Practical Project Management Training Matters | Leadmark

Updated: 3 days ago
Sometimes, the most rewarding opportunities come from paths you never planned to take.
Over the past few years, many people, including my own family, have asked why I’m delivering the Project Training for Business People program at this stage in my career. The truth is, I never expected to be doing this. But sometimes, you take a step down a new path, and before you know it, three years have passed, hundreds of people have been trained, and you’ve discovered a new way to make a difference.

It All Started with One Question about Project Management Training
In late 2023, I was preparing to retire. I had set the date, was wrapping things up, and was looking forward to the next chapter.
During a meeting with the head of HR, I was saying my goodbyes when she asked me a question I hadn’t anticipated:
“Have you ever thought about providing project management training?”
My initial response was something along the lines of, “No, there are plenty of people and companies already doing that very well.”
But then she said something that changed my perspective:
“We want you to train us on how you do it.”
She wasn’t asking me to teach people how to lead large, complex projects, run a Project Management Office (PMO), or navigate formal assurance and governance processes. She wanted something more practical: how I get things done using project management principles and effective project leadership.
That was a different conversation, and it got me thinking.
Turning Experience into Practical Skills
After giving the idea some thought, we agreed to run a pilot training program to see how it would be received.
The response was overwhelmingly positive.
What started as a single opportunity has grown into three years of training hundreds of people across multiple companies and industries. It reinforced something I have come to believe strongly: project management doesn’t have to be complicated or overwhelming to be effective.
People need practical tools, clear approaches, and the confidence to apply what they learn in their day-to-day work. They need to understand how to plan effectively, make informed decisions, manage risks, take accountability, and keep work moving forward.
Most importantly, they need training that connects to the real challenges they face,
rather than simply introducing concepts that are difficult to apply outside the classroom.
That is the thinking behind Project Training for Business People: making project management practical, accessible, and useful for the people who need it most.
The Next Chapter for Leadmark Project Delivery
The success of the training has encouraged us at Leadmark Project Delivery to take the next step. We are expanding how we deliver our programs so that more individuals and organizations can access practical project management training in the way that works best for them.
Our offerings now include:
In-person training: Interactive sessions that can be customized to meet an organization's specific needs.
Corporate e-learning: Customized digital learning solutions designed to support employee development and organizational goals.
Online course library: Individual e-learning courses available directly through our website, allowing learners to access training at their convenience.
We are encouraged by the response so far, and we already have plans to expand our course offerings across all three areas.
Our goal is straightforward: to help people build practical project management skills they can use immediately, without wasting their time or making the process more complicated than it needs to be.
Why Training Matters to Me Now
At this stage of my career, training people has become one of the most meaningful ways I can contribute.
Throughout my career, I have gained experience leading projects, working with teams, navigating challenges, and finding ways to get things done. Sharing that experience allows it to have an impact beyond the projects I have personally worked on.
When people develop new skills, gain confidence in their abilities, and learn how to approach challenges more effectively, the benefits extend beyond the individual. Their teams become stronger, their organizations become more capable, and they are better equipped to take on new opportunities.
I’m proud to play a part in that process. Helping people grow, tackle new challenges, and build their own paths forward has given this unexpected chapter of my career a real sense of purpose.
Retirement may have been the original plan, but sometimes the best opportunities are the ones you never saw coming.
And I’m glad I took this one.
